Following the NIST 800-88 Standard
The NIST 800-88 Standard focuses on sanitizing electronic storage devices. The methods used must prevent information from being recovered in the future. Popular methods for sanitization are:
- Clearing data: This practice overwrites information on storage devices so that it is unobtainable using hardware or software.
- Purging data: Metal storage mediums are wiped through the process of magnetic field exposures.
- Destroying data: Physical destruction is the easiest and most secure approach to erasing data, and it involves shredding items into pieces.
NIST 800-88 rules indicate a Certificate of Destruction is necessary post-shred. The document should identify the date of destruction, the methods used and the names of employees who completed the activity.
The method used for sanitization will depend on the sensitivity of the information stored on each drive.

Use the MediaVision® Scanner from Phiston Technologies to track how many hard drives you shred in a session. Our scanners interact with hard drive barcodes before destruction. Choose from manual or automatic settings to streamline your operations.
MediaVision® Scanners do not proceed with crushing unless they can capture a barcode. The machines will eject the hard drive to indicate it is unreadable.
Our experts recommend adding the MediaVault® Bin from our accessories collection to help transport media without unauthorized access posing an issue. Each bin has a tamper-proof locking lid and caster wheels, making it easy to relocate from point A to point B.
